Publications include: a book, The Conservatism Resurgence and the Press: The Media's Role in the Rise of the Right (Northwestern University Press, 2008); "The Contemporary Media, 2000-Present" in The Media in America: A History, 7th ed. (2008); "Sex and Scandal" in The Encyclopedia of American Popular Culture (in press); "Sex and Scandal" in The Culture of Celebrity (forthcoming); a book, Journalism at the End of the American Century, 1965-Present (2006); chapters in four other books; articles in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, American Journalism, Journalism History, and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics; and numerous other articles, conference papers and book reviews.

Former editor of The Intelligencer, the newsletter of the American Journalism Historians Association; co-chair of the AJHA task force to assess and try to improve the profile of media history as a subject in university communication programs; organizer and host of the Oct. 2008 AJHA national convention, in Seattle, and convention paper reviewer.

Winner of the 2007 Academic Challenge Award for teaching at Whitworth. Participant in panel discussions about presidential politics, feminism, media and the family, the Iraq War, Social Security, creative teaching, the use of theory in historiography, and the integration of faith and learning.

Professional media experience includes: various newspaper positions (editor, reporter, photographer); freelance writer/editor/ photographer; corporate and nonprofit public relations; advertising manager. Also once hosted a news-talk radio program on KWRS.
