HONOLULU - Liz Horiatis scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead visiting Whitworth to a season-opening 63-44 win over Chaminade in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday night.

Liz Horiatis

Horiatis (So., P, Woodinville, Wash.) made 8 of 17 shots from the floor and grabbed eight offensive boards within her total of 13 to lead the Pirates. Natalie Orrell (Jr., G, Wenatchee, Wash.) added 15 points, while Cassie Pilkinton (Jr., G, Chelan, Wash.) dished seven assists.

Samantha Saito scored 14 points to lead the NCAA DII Silverswords (0-4).

Pilkinton's three-pointer gave Whitworth a 16-4 lead almost six minutes into the game and the Pirates went on to take a 35-19 halftime lead. The Bucs were never threatened in the second half, taking their largest lead of 25 points (53-28) on a basket by Horiatis with just under nine minutes left in the contest.

Horiatis scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds last season in a win over Northwest University. That point total remains a career high and the rebound number was surpassed as a career high by her 13 points tonight.

Whitworth will continue its trip to Hawaii on Friday with a game at BYU-Hawaii at 7:00 p.m. (HST).
