Whitworth Steps Up Defense in Rout of Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. - Whitworth turned up the defensive pressure in the second half to defeat Caltech 76-46 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Friday afternoon at Braun Gym.

The Pirates (3-2) held the Beavers (0-3) to 21.7% shooting in the second half and forced 15 turnovers after halftime to outscore the host 33-13 in the second period.

Leah Pomante scored 14 of her 19 points in the first half to help Whitworth grab a 43-33 lead at the break. But the Pirates could not shake the Beavers in the first half as Caltech shot 54% in the first half. Whitworth opened the second half on a 7-0 run and steadily pulled away from Caltech the rest of the half.

Liz Horiatis posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates, while Cassie Pilkinton added 14 points and seven boards.Pomante had four steals and three assists to go along with her team-high 19 points.

Lisa Yee led Caltech with 14 points and 6'-2" freshman post Krissy Dahl scored 12 points, but only one after halftime.

Whitworth will conclude its nine-day, season-opening trip through Hawaii and Southern California on Saturday at Redlands.
