Whitworth Ends Season With Win Over L&C

SPOKANE, Wash. - Three Whitworth women scored in the double digits to lead Whitworth to a season-ending 80-72 win over visiting Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference game on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Natalie Orrell (Jr., G, Wenatchee, Wash.) shot 3-4 from the three point line and 9-11 from the field to score 25 points for Whitworth. Cassie Pilkinton (Jr., G, Chelan, Wash.) shot 11-14 from the charity line and 50% (5-10) from the field for 23 points, and Liz Horiatis (Jr., P, Woodinville, Wash.) added 14. Whitworth was 25-50 (50%) from the field and 7-15 (46.7%) from behind the arc.

Four Pioneer women were also in double digits. Kimberly Kittell scored 18 points to lead Lewis & Clark, followed by Tallera Rich’s 16, Margaret Dowling’s 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Micahela Satter’s 12 points.

The first half score was tied nine times over first 20 minutes. Lewis & Clark opened up the scoring, and Pilkinton answered with a jumper and two good free throws to tie 4-4 three minutes into play. The Pirates gained the largest lead of the half on a Pilkinton three to go up 24-19 with 9:27 left to play before Kittell answered with a three of her own. Megan Spence scored four points in a row to take the lead 31-30 for L&C with 3:29 to go. Whitworth then made a 5-0 run, led by another Pilkinton trey and free throw. Kittell ended the half with a jumper for the Pioneers to go into the locker room down 38-35.

Horiatis opened the second half with two made free throws, answered by two free throws by Christina Herring. Rich scored a three to tie the game 42-42 at the 16:57 mark before Whitworth went on an 8-0 run, ending with a layup by Pilkinton to go up 50-42. Whitworth maintained its lead for the next few minutes before Dowling scored six points to spur a small Pioneer comeback to bring the score back within 62-60 with 5:45 to go. However, Pilkinton scored six more points to take a 70-62 lead by the 3:49 mark, and then two more free throws to gain the largest lead of the night at 80-70 with one minute to go. Emily Deichsel scored the last points of the game with two free throws, and Whitworth won 80-72.

Whitworth recognized seniors Alida Bower (Onalaska, Wash.), Corigliano, Jamie Scott (Tacoma, Wash.) and Holly Tomlin (Kirkland, Wash.) prior to the game.

Whitworth ended the season with a 13-12 overall, 7-9 NWC record to give the Pirates a 6th place finish. Lewis & Clark finished 11-14, 5-11.
