Whitworth Knocks Off 9th-ranked Washington University
Whitman Tops CLU on Day One of NBC Camps Whit Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth came back from three double digit deficits to upset 9th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) 73-68 on Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse in the second game of the NBC Camps Whit Classic. In the tournament opener Whitman also used a comeback to defeat California Lutheran 74-57.

Tiffany Corigliano

Tiffany Corigliano (Sr., P, Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) led the Pirates in both scoring and rebounding, generating 18 points and grabbing 11 boards. Cassie Pilkinton (Jr., C, Chelan, Wash.) followed with 16 points, and Leah Pomante (Jr., G, Colbert, Wash.) also scored 10.

The Bears were led in scoring by Halsey Ward with 17 points. Kathryn Berger and Jaimie McFarlin each scored 10 points and snatched 10 rebounds.

Washington pull ahead 10-2 in the first five minutes of play, led by Alex Hoover’s jumper and 3-pointer. The Bears stayed in control throughout the half. Pilkinton made a three-point play with seven minutes left and scored a three-point play a few minutes later to bring Whitworth within three, but free throws by Berger and Ward in the last three minutes helped the Bears to create a double-digit lead and end the half ahead 35-24.

In the second half the Pirates began to chip away at Washington’s lead. Corigliano and Pilkinton each scored a three-pointer in the first four minutes to draw within six, despite three early treys by Ward. Outside shooting proved to be Whitworth’s ally as the Bucs shot 60% from behind the arc and made nine threes in the second half. Corigliano made a three to gain Whitworth’s first lead in the game at 61-60 with just under four minutes left, and Washington had just one field goal in the last five minutes as Whitworth went on to win 73-68.

Game 1 - Whitman 74, Cal Lutheran 57 (box score and play by play)

The Missionaries (5-0) outscored the Regals (1-4) 42-23 in the second half to overcome an eight-point deficit late in the first half. Michelle Krall led four Whitman players who scored in double figures with 18 points.

CLU jumped to a quick 5-0 lead after five straight points by Nita Sims, but Whitman regrouped to outscore the Regals 15-4 over the next six minutes. Krall scored seven during the run. But Cal Lutheran answered by outscoring the Missionaries 19-5 over the next eight minutes. The Regals took a 28-20 lead after back to back three-pointers by Britlyn Garrett and Kourtney Jones with 5:42 to play in the half. However Whitman chipped away and pulled within 34-32 at halftime on a pair of free throws by Krall with 19 seconds left.

The teams traded leads over the first five minutes of the second half, but with the scored tied 40-40 Whitman went on a quick 8-0 run and the Missionaries never trailed again. Rebecca Sexton's lay up with 6:40 to play gave Whitman its first double-digit lead (59-48) and the advantage reached 68-52 on Ellen Vertatschitsch's jumper with 3:33 to play. The final score was the largest margin of the game.

In addition to Krall's 18 points Secton finished with 14 and Janele Peterson chipped in 12. Hilary White had a strong all-around game for the Missionaries with 10 points and team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (5). Whitman made 48% of its shots from the floor, including 55% in the second half, despite going 0-14 from beyond the three point line.

Sims led CLU with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Jones contributed 14 points.

The classic concludes on Saturday with Washington taking on Whitman in the 4:00 game and Whitworth hosting Cal Lutheran in the 6:00 p.m. tip off.
