Pacific Shoots Past Whitworth

FOREST Grove, Ore. - The Whitworth women’s team finished their Oregon tour with a loss to Pacific 62-49 in Northwest Conference play.

Cassie Pilkinton (Jr., G, Chelan, Wash.) led Whitworth in scoring with 15 points. Natalie Orrell (Jr., F, Cusick, Wash.) also made double digits with 10, and Alida Bower (Sr., F, Onalaska, Wash.) put up nine. Liz Horiatis (Jr., P, Woodinville, Wash.) and Tiffany Corigliano (Sr., P, Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) each grabbed seven rebounds.

Rochelle Reeves led both teams with 18 points, shooting 8-11 from the field and 2-4 from the three point line. Julianne Erbe scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds. Pacific shot 49.1% from the field.

Pilkinton scored five of her points in the first five minutes to open the half with a Whitworth lead 11-8. A jumper by Reeves and a made free throw by Kayla Akers tied the game at 11-11. The game went scoreless for the next three and a half minutes until Brittany Anderson's layup sparked a 14-4 run by the Boxers, topped by one of Reeves’ treys. Bower scored a three to bring the Bucs within seven (27-20) with 3:46 left in the half, but Pacific maintained their lead and went into halftime up 29-21.

Pilkinton opened the second half as well, scoring a jumper and making a free throw to bring Whitworth back within six. However, that was the closest the Bucs came the rest of the night, as Erbe and Reeves led the way to extending the lead 50-36 with 4:12 left to play. Heather Burke (Jr., G, Cheney, Wash.) scored a three as the Pirates pulled back to within ten, but Pacific kept its composure. Andrea Jones scored for the Boxers with a last-second layup, leading to a final score of 62-49.

The Boxers hit 49% of their shots from the field while holding the Pirates to only 35% from the floor.

Whitworth (11-8 overall, 5-5 NWC) will return home to continue conference play against Willamette on Feb. 6 at 6 pm. Pacific (7-11, 6-4) travels to Pacific Lutheran.
