SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth University cross country coach Toby Schwarz and men's competitor Nick Gallagher are two of the 16 recipients of the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Coaches and Athletes of the Year, as presented by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Gallagher (So., Bedford, Iowa) won the first regional title in Whitworth history while leading the Pirates to the team championship at the NCAA West Region meet in Salem, Oregon last Saturday. Gallagher finished second at the Northwest Conference Championships earlier this month as Whitworth won the team title for the first time since 1972. Gallagher was the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week in men's cross country three times this fall (Sept. 8, Oct. 6, Oct. 13). Two weeks after ending Willamette's run of six Northwest Conference titles with Whitworth's first NWC championship in 36 years, Schwarz guided the 24th-ranked Pirates to their first regional title and team berth in the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships. This is Schwarz's 11th season as Whitworth's cross country coach. He was the USTFCCCA West Region Women's Coach of the Year in 2003. The USTFCCCA selects an athlete and coach from each of the eight regions across the country. The Pirate men will run on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Hanover, Indiana.
