Whitworth Women Win Willamette Grass Course

SALEM, Ore. -- Placing four runners among the top nine finishers, Whitworth University won the women's race on Saturday at the Willamette University Grass Course Invitational, knocking off the host Bearcats. The Pirate men took third in the meet.

Misterek was the top Pirate women's finisher

Dana Misterek was the top finisher for the women, covering the five kilometer course in 19:10.57 to finish sixth, just ahead of Jo E Mayer who finished in 19:10.88. Tonya Turner was eighth in 19:11.07 and Jenna Cunningham was 9th with a time of 19:30.96. Kathryn Williams rounded out the Whitworth scorers in 14th place with a time of 19:31.60.

Maddie Coffman of Willamette won the race with a time of 18:04.00. But Whitworth's depth was enough to give the Bucs the team title with a score of 39 points. Willamette finished second (52), followed by NCAA Division II Western Oregon (62), Team GFR (106), Pacific Lutheran (137) and Lane CC (146).

The final men's scores were: Willamette 30, Western Oregon 39, Whitworth 70, Lane CC 114, Pacific Lutheran 140, Pacific 167. Chris Reed of WOU won the 7.01 kilometer race in 22:36.50.

Nick Gallagher led the Pirates with a ninth place finish in 23:13.20, while Dusty Caseria took 12th in 23:20.52. Aaron Jenkins was 15th in 23:29.74, followed by Tyler Dudley in 17th with a time of 23:30.33. Emmanuel Bofa rounded out the Whitworth scoring with a 19th place finish in 23:36.14.

Whitworth will take next weekend off of competition before returning to Salem, Oregon to compete in Willamette's Charles Bowles Classic on Saturday, October 4th.
