SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth swept the weekly Northwest Conference football honors this week, as three different Pirates were named NWC Offensive Player of the Week, NWC Defensive Player of the Week and NWC Special Teams Player of the Week. It is the first time in school history that Whitworth has won all three awards the same week. Senior quarterback Joel Clark (Spokane, Wash. - Mt. Spokane), junior strong safety Jay Tully (Spokane, Wash. - Mead) and junior corner back and return specialist Ryan Marshall (Salem, Ore. - Sprague) led the Pirates to a 37-16 win over visiting La Verne last Saturday.
Clark earned the offensive award after amassing 331 yards of total offense. He completed 79% (15 of 19) of his passes for 199 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran the ball six times for 132 yards, including a career-long 76 yard touchdown when he faked a hand off out of the shot gun formation and ran untouched around the left end to the endzone. Clark is now Whitworth's all-time career leader in total offense and needs one more touchdown pass to tie the career record of 57 set by Denny Spurlock in 1961. Clark has thrown a touchdown in 20 straight games and at least two touchdowns in the last 11 games in a row. Tully, who earned the defensive player of the week award, led the Pirates with 10 tackles on Saturday. He ended one La Verne drive by jumping over a receiver to intercept a pass in the endzone, which he then returned out to the 30 yard line. He ended a second La Verne possession when he broke up a pass on fourth and three. He currently ranks second on the team with 15 tackles this season and is tied for the lead in interceptions with two. Tully is tied for team lead in interceptions with Marshall, who added one of his own on Saturday. But Marshall was named the special teams player of the week after returning three punts for 65 yards. Marshall also picked up a blocked extra point and returned the ball for a defensive two-point conversion, the first in Whitworth history. The trio will lead 17th-ranked Whitworth into a game this Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie. Game time begins at 1:00 pm (CDT) / 11:00 am (PDT) and can be heard live on KSBN 1230 am. |
