YAKIMA, Wash. - Whitworth finished in third place at the 2009 Northwest Conference women's golf tournament on Sunday at Apple Tree Golf Course. Puget Sound won the tournament and used the points to move into a tie with the Pirates in the final conference golf standings. By virtue of the win in the season-ending tournament, the Loggers gain the tie-breaker and will take the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament next month in Florida. Whitworth's Liz Martin finished with a two-day score of 179 (87-92) to finish tied for eighth in the final individual standings. Sarah Bicker of UPS was the individual medalist with an 82-80 - 162. After a first day 379, the Pirates improved to 366 on Sunday for a two-day total of 739. Krystal Pitkonen (86), Mariesa Stombaugh (90), Martin and Rachel Dubes (98) had the four scores that factored into the team total on Sunday. After Martin, the final individual totals for Whitworth were: Pitkonen 98-86 - 184, Stombaugh 97-90 - 187, Dubes 92-98 - 190, Sophie Sestero 100-98 - 198 and Alicia Bratlien 97-114 - 211. The final tournament team scores were: Puget Sound 355-341 - 696, Linfield 365-335 - 700, Whitworth 373-366 - 739, George Fox 379-363 742, Pacific (Ore.) 388-359 - 744, Pacific Lutheran 446-405 - 851, Willamette 446-421 - 867, Whitman 449-423 - 872.
