Whitworth Women Win NWC North Tournament
Men's Team Posts Second-Day Comeback

KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Whitworth University women's golf team posted four of the top five individual scores to roll to an easy win at the Northwest Conference Fall North Tournament on Sunday and Monday at Canyon Lakes Golf Course. The Pirate men rallied on the second day to tie Puget Sound for first place in the team standings, while Ryan Young won a four-hole playoff for individual medalist honors.

Whitworth only had a two-stroke lead after the first day of the women's tournament, leading Puget Sound 350-352. But the Pirates posted a 339 on the second day to finish with a final score of 689, ten strokes ahead of UPS (699). Pacific Lutheran was far behind (799), while Whitman was unable to post a team score.

Krystal Pitkonen (Jr., Colbert, Wash.) led Whitworth with a two-round score of 84-83 - 167. She finished nine strokes behind medalist Natalie Nakamine of UPS. Liz Martin (Fr., Portland, Ore.) was third individually (85-86 - 171) and Alicia Bratlien (Jr., Poulsbo, Wash.) was fourth (89-85 - 174). Mariesa Stombaugh (Jr., Salem, Ore.) finished fifth (92-85 - 177), giving Whitworth four of the top five women's scores.

The Whitworth men also had a strong second day, rallying from six strokes behind to tie Puget Sound for the team title. The Pirates shot a disappointing 316 on Sunday, but came through with a score of 304 on Monday for a total of 620. The Loggers shot a consistent 310-310.

Ryan Young

Young (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) shot 73-75 - 148 to tie for first place with Brian Barton of Whitman (74-74 - 148). Young then went on to win a four-hole playoff with Barton.

Jeff Aly (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) was fifth individually (81-74 - 155), while James Dykes (Sr., Royal City, Wash.) was seventh (81-76 - 157).

The Whitworth men will compete in the Spokane Cup against CC of Spokane and Gonzaga on October 17th at Hangman Valley. The next day the teams will play in the NWC Fall Classic Tournaments, which count toward one-fourth of the final conference standings. The women will play at Juniper GC in Redmond, Oregon, while the men will tee off back at Canyon Lakes.
