University Place, Wash. - Facing an important Northwest Conference golf tournament with no prior competitive play this spring, the Whitworth men slipped to fifth place in the final standings on Tuesday at the NWC Spring Classic. The Pirates finished with a two-day score of 649 at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
Whitworth was unable to get in a competitive round earlier this spring when the Pacific Invitational was rained out on March 14-15. A wet and windy day near Puget Sound caused scores to balloon across the board on Tuesday. Jeff Aly (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) led the Pirates by tying for 10th in the final individual standings. He shot 77-81 - 158. James Dykes (Sr., Royal City, Wash.) finished with a score of 78-83 - 161 to tie for 16th place. He was the only other Pirate among the top 20 individuals. Ryan Young (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) shot 78-86 - 164, while Curtis Day (Fr., Citrus Heights, Calif.), 85-81 - 166, was one of the few players to improve on the second day. Jacob McCallum (Fr. Wenatchee, Wash.) rounded out the Pirate individual results with a score of 87-86 - 173. Max Bonk of Pacific (Ore.) survived Tuesday's weather to win the NWC Spring Classic individual title with a total of 65-82 - 147. The final team scores from the NWC Men's Spring Classic were: Pacific (Ore) 294-324 - 618, Puget Sound 308-316 - 624, Linfield 300-325 - 625; Willamette 317-330 - 647, Whitworth 318-331 - 649, Whitman 320-330 - 650, Pacific Lutheran 305-347 - 652, George Fox 333-352 - 685. Whitworth picked up four points toward the final NWC golf standings. The Pirates (9 points) are now tied with Willamette for fourth place in the current standings. The NWC Fall Classic and NWC Spring Classic both count 25% toward the final conference standings, while the end-of-the-year NWC Tournament will count 50%.
