SPOKANE, Wash. - After a fourth conference title in the last five seasons, five Whitworth men's soccer players have been chosen to the 2008 NSCAA/adidas NCAA DIII All-Far West Region Team. Click here for the 2008 All-NWC Team. Caleb Barnhill (Sr., F, Sultan, Wash.), the 2008 NWC Offensive Player of the Year, was one of three Pirate men named to the All-Region Second Team. Two other Whitworth players were Third Team selections.
Barnhill (Sr., F, Sultan, Wash.) and John Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) are Second Team forwards. Bryan Olson (Jr., D, Missoula, Mont.) is a Second Team defender. Barnhill led the Northwest Conference in total points (28), points per game (1.40), total goals (13) and goals per game (0.65) this season. He had a team-high three game-winning goals, including the only goal in a 1-0 win at Linfield and a late score in a 3-2 win over PLU on September 28th. Prugh finished the season with seven goals and tied for the team lead with five assists. He had the match-winning goal in double overtime in a season-opening victory over Cal State East Bay. Olson, a center back, is Whitworth's leader in minutes played each of the last three seasons. He was a key reason the Pirates finished second in the NWC with a 0.89 goals against average.
Travis Jette (Sr., D, Missoula, Mont.) and Elly Bulega (Jr., F, Tacoma, Wash.) were Third Team selections. Jette tied for the team lead with five assists as a defender who was a threat to come forward. He had a goal and assist in Whitworth's 3-2 win over Whitman at home. Bulega finished second on the team with eight goals, including two during a 4-0 win over nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus early in the season. Whitworth finished 14-2-4 this season while winning a second straight NWC title and fourth in the last five seasons. The Pirates made their fifth NCAA Division III tournament appearance, tying Augsburg (Minn.) 1-1 before the Auggies advanced on a penalty kick shootout.
