Gustavus Slips Past PLU
Aug. 29, 2008

SPOKANE, Wash.- Whitworth University forward John Prugh converted a penalty kick in double overtime to lift the Pirates to a 2-1 win over Cal State East Bay in the season opening match for both schools. It is also the opening match of the Northwest Capital Management Classic at Whitworth. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) edged Pacific Lutheran 1-0 in the second game of the tournament's first day.

Prugh had a goal and assist for the Pirates

Midfielder Brent Zahn (Jr., M, Eagle River, Alaska) was fouled in the box in the 104th minute, earning the penalty kick for the Pirates. Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) converted to the lower right corner to give Whitworth the win.

Prugh set up the Bucs' first goal when he drove hard past a defender on the left side of the box and sent a short cross to Caleb Barnhill (Sr., F, Sultan, Wash.), who finished the goal to give Whitworth a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

East Bay tied the match in the 40th minute when Stephen Nichols sent a hard shot from the right side that was saved by Whitworth keeper Brian Sherpe (Fr., Centennal, Colo.), but Chris Pereira jumped on the rebound and put the ball back in the net.

Whitworth had a 23-10 advantage in total shots against the Pioneers, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Pirates also earned 8 corner kicks to 1 for East Bay. But Pioneer keeper Kristopher Hall made six saves to help keep his team in the match.

Sherpe finished with one save for Whitworth, while Jeff Srock (Jr., GK, Colbert, Wash.) finished the game and made two saves.

Gustavus Adolphus 1, Pacific Lutheran 0 - Box score
Ben Eriksson scored the game's only goal in the ninth minute to lift the Gusties to a 1-0 win over the Lutes.

Justin Egleseder lofted a free kick from 35 yards away into the middle of the keeper box, where Eriksson was able to head the ball past PLU keeper Daniel Mangum for the only goal of the match.

The game was evenly played throughout with Gustavus barely outshooting PLU 7-6, while the Lutes had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Both defenses controlled play with much of the action taking place in the middle third of the field.

A flurry occurred in the final minute of the match when Trevor McDonald's shot from a right-side angle was just saved over the bar by GAC keeper Luke Strom, forcing a Lute corner kick. But Gustavus gained control and moved the ball upfield. It appeared the Gusties were content to simply keep possession in the corner when Bret Vander Streek suddenly turned toward the goal and fired a shot that hit the cross bar before sailing out of bounds.

Mangum and Strom each finished with a pair of saves.

Whitworth and Gustavus will play for the Classic championship on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. (PDT). PLU and Cal State East Bay will meet in the final match of the Classic on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
