TACOMA, Wash.- (From PLU Sports Information Office) Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth battled through 110 minutes of men’s soccer action before the teams settled for a 1-1 Northwest Conference draw on Saturday afternoon.

Eddy Prugh scored
Whitworth's lone goal

The two goals were scored within 20 seconds of each other in the first half. The visiting Pirates got on the board first at 11:58 when Eddy Prugh (Fr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) scored his sixth goal of the season on a rocket that beat PLU keeper Daniel Mangum. Brent Zahn (Jr., MF, Eagle River, Alaska) started the play with a pass to John Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.), who flicked the ball onto his brother, who struck his long-range shot with power and precision. The goal was Prugh's fourth in the last three matches.

The Whitworth coaches, players and fans were still celebrating when Pacific Lutheran’s Jason Bjorgo knotted the score with his own long blast. Bjorgo took the ball near the center stripe and dribbled through the defense, finally shooting and beating Pirates keeper Jeff Srock (Jr., GK, Colbert, Wash.) low and to the left.

That was it for the scoring, though both teams showed flashes of offense that forced the respective goalkeepers to be at the top of their games. PLU’s Mangum tipped several balls over the cross bar, including one that would have been an own goal, while Srock made several nice saves on PLU efforts in the second half.

Pacific Lutheran’s Chad Kearns had two good chances, the first a one-touch effort and the second a header, that both just sailed over the bar.

The Lutes ended up with a majority of the shots, taking 16 to the Pirates’ 10, though both teams ended up with six shots on goal. The strong offensive efforts resulted in a total of 20 corner kicks, 11 by the visiting Pirates.

With the tie, the Pirates (11-2-2 overall, 7-2-1 conference) now have 22 points maintain a two-point lead in the Northwest Conference title chase over both Whitman and Puget Sound. Pacific Lutheran (6-7-2, 4-4-2) sits in fifth place in the conference with 14 points.

Both teams return to Northwest Conference action at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, the Lutes hosting the Whitman Missionaries and the Pirates playing at Puget Sound.
