Click here for complete box score. SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- Whitworth University held on to tie UC Santa Cruz 2-2 in a non-conference men's soccer match in California on Monday. The 15th-ranked Pirates are now 3-0-1, while the Banana Slugs, participants in each of the last five NCAA Division III tournaments, fell to 1-2-1.
Caleb Barnhill (Sr., F, Sultan, Wash.) scored his third goal of the weekend to give Whitworth a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute of the match. It is his team-leading fifth goal of the season. In the 38th minute Whitworth was awarded a penalty kick and John Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) converted to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead at the break. Whitworth held on to that lead until the final ten minutes of the match, when UCSC used two goals by Matt Fondy to tie the game and grab the momentum. His goals came in the 82nd and 84th minutes. UCSC outshot the Pirates 4-3 in the two overtime periods, but neither team was able to get a shot on-goal. There were five yellow cards assessed in the physical contest, three against Whitworth. The Pirates will now return to Spokane to host Wisconsin-Whitewater on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Warhawks (2-0-1) played in the NCAA Division III tournament last season.
