SPOKANE, Wash.- Eddy Prugh scored his first career goal with just under nine minutes left in the match to lift 8th-ranked Whitworth University to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over visiting Wisconsin-Whitewater in a non-conference men's soccer match on Thursday afternoon.
Prugh (Fr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) beat Warhawk keeper Kevin Spry to a ball at the top of the box and lofted his shot into the goal in the 82nd minute. John Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.), Eddy's older brother, sent the pass forward for the assist on that goal. Whitewater controlled the run of play for the first 15 minutes of the match, taking a 1-0 lead when Matt Gehn sent a pass through the middle of the Pirate defense to Luke Buchholz, who converted it into a goal in the 9th minute. Whitworth's Jeff Srock (Jr., GK, Colbert, Wash.), who started the match, had to make three first half saves to keep the Pirates within a goal. Whitworth began to manage possession and force Whitewater to defend over the final 20 minutes of the first half. In the 44th minute Ben Rotert (Sr., D, Bozeman, Mont.) sent a long free kick forward and Spry was unable to fist the ball away. Instead it went to Whitworth's Joey Mattina (Jr., M, Missoula, Mont.), whose header toward the goal was stopped by Jake Duros' hand ball. A red card was assessed and Mattina converted the penalty kick to tie the match. Playing down a player in the second half, the Warhawks were unable to mount an effective offensive push and finished with no shots on goal after the break. Brian Sherpe (Fr., GK, Centennial, Colo.) played the second half in goal for the Bucs but did not have to make a save. Whitworth's Travis Jette (Sr., D, Missoula, Mont.) was given a red card with 6:40 left in the match to even up the numbers on the field, but UWW still could not work for an effective shot. Whitworth (4-0-1) will open Northwest Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 20th at Linfield College. Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-1-1) will complete its trip to Spokane with a neutral site match (at Whitworth) on Saturday against Pacific Lutheran University.
