Whitworth Posts Second Straight Shutout

SALEM, Ore.- (From Willamette Sports Information Office) John Prugh and Eddy Prugh each scored a goal on Sunday to lift visiting Whitworth University to a 2-0 win over Willamette University in a Northwest Conference men's soccer contest.

The 13th-ranked Pirates improved to 6-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 1-5 overall, 0-2in the NWC.

John Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) opened the scoring at 9:35 on a 12-yard shot that he slotted past Bearcat goalkeeper Mark Bennett. It was his fourth goal of the season and Travis Jette (Sr., D, Missoula, Mont.) had the assist on the play.

Eddy Prugh (Fr., F, Bozeman, Mont.) added an insurance goal at 61:07, as he struck the net from six yards on a follow shot near the right post. Cameron Bushey (Fr., MF, Spokane, Wash.), whose initial shot was saved by Bennett before Eddy Prugh gathered the rebound, was credited with an assist on the second goal.

Bennett recorded nine saves for the Bearcats. Jeff Srock (Jr., GK, Colbert, Wash.) provided one save for Whitworth in the first half. Brian Sherpe (Fr., GK, Centennial, Colo.) was in goal for the Pirates in the second half and made two saves. Whitworth outshot Willamette, 21-8 overall and 11-3 in shots on goal. The Pirates also committed 14 more fouls (20-6) and attained a 6-2 margin in corner kicks.

Whitworth its Northwest Conference title defense next weekend at home when the Pirates host University of Puget Sound on Saturday and Pacific Lutheran University on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. as the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader.
