The win vaulted the 20th-ranked Pirates (8-1-1 overall, 4-1 NWC, 12 points) over the Missionaries (5-1-5, 3-1-1, 10 points) into first place in the conference standings. Unbeaten Whitman came to Whitworth looking for its first win over the Pirates since 2000 and the Missionaries controlled the first 25 minutes of the match, outshooting the Pirates 12-2. Whitworth keeper Brian Sherpe (Fr., GK, Centennial, Colo.) made three saves in that early stretch to keep the game scoreless. The momentum began to swing towards the hosts when two runs down the left side led to Whitworth shots. Whitman keeper Brett Axelrod saved a point-blank effort by NWC scoring leader Caleb Barnhill (Sr., F, Sultan, Wash.) to keep the Pirates off of the board. But Axelrod had to come way out of the box on a breakaway by Whitworth's Joey Mattina (Jr., M, Missoula, Mont.) and he committed a foul that drew a red card for the offense. Because the foul occurred outside of the box, no penalty kick was assessed and Cameron Bushey's (Fr., M, Spokane) free kick was just outside the left post. Thirty seconds later Bushey sent in a corner kick that was controlled by Eddy Prugh (Fr., F, Bozeman, Mont.), who passed to John Prugh (Sr., F, Bozeman, Mont.), who crossed to Brookover (So., M, Boise, Idaho) right in front of the goal for his first tally of the season in the 40th minute. The Pirates appeared to take a 2-0 lead with 1:28 to play in the half, but John Prugh's goal was called back on an offsides penalty. Playing a man down, Whitman managed to tie the match in the 57th minute when Whitworth was unable to clear defensively. Todd Wallenius gathered possession and passed out to Greg Phillips at the top of the box, who drove the ball into the upper left corner of the net for his fist goal of the season. Travis Jette (Sr., D, Missoula, Mont.) gave Whitworth the lead back in the 72nd minute when he took a pass from John Prugh and lofted the ball over Whitman's back-up keeper Tim Shu. But Shu made two saves after that goal to keep the Missionaries in the match, including a diving stop on an attempt by Mattina in the 81st minute. Then Whitman was able to turn a corner kick into a sloppy match-tying goal. Joe Johnson served a ball from the corner that three Pirates had a chance to clear, but none got a solid foot on the ball, allowing Stephen Phillips to gather possession and find the net for his third goal of the season early in the 83rd minute. Whitworth pressured the goal through all six minutes of overtime, and finally scored when Jette lofted a pass over a Whitman defender and Brookover got his foot under the ball and lifted a shot over Shu and into the net in the 97th minute of the match. Whitworth and Whitman will both travel to Oregon next weekend to conclude the first half of the NWC schedule. The Pirates will play at Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday, while the Missionaries take on George Fox. The teams swap opponents on Sunday. Go to Athletics Home Page > Men's Soccer > Sports Releases > |
