TACOMA, Wash. -- Whitney Ramsey scored once and added an assist to lead Whitworth University to a 2-0 win over Chapman University in the Pirates' 2008 season opener, played at the University of Puget Sound.

Ramsey had a goal and an assist in the win

Ramsey (Sr., F, Spokane, Wash.) scored the first Whitworth goal of the season when she took a crossing pass from the right side and shot the ball past Panther keeper Madison Coffin in the 25th minute of the game.

The Pirates picked up the insurance goal in the 59th minute when Penelope Crowe (Sr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) scored into an open net. Both Ramsey and Allie Smith (Fr., F, Missoula, Mont.) picked up an assist on the play.

Callie Bergstrom (Fr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made three saves to earn a shutout in her first career start in the net.

Despite playing a team that already had a match under its belt, the Pirates controlled the action with Chapman, outshooting the Panthers 21-7.

Whitworth will continue on the road this coming weekend, playing at UC Santa Cruz on September 5th in a rematch of last season's NCAA First Round contest the Pirates won 2-1 in overtime. Whitworth will play at Cal State East Bay on September 7th.
