SPOKANE, Wash.-- The Whitworth women's soccer team continued its late-season surge, rolling past visiting Lewis & Clark 5-0 in a Northwest Conference match on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Five different players scored for the 15th-ranked Pirates (13-4-1 overall, 9-4-1 NWC), who won for the seventh time in the last eight matches. The Pioneers fell to 4-10-4, 3-10-1. Kelly Baker (Sr., D, Boise, Idaho) gave Whitworth a quick 1-0 lead when she took a pass from Kara Tisthammer (Sr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) and shot over the head of L&C keeper Kate MacDougal in the fifth minute for her fifth goal of the season. In the 17th minute Whitney Ramsey (Sr., F, Spokane, Wash.) headed in a corner kick off of the foot of Lindsey Oakes (Jr., MF, Boise, Idaho) for a 2-0 Pirate lead. It was Ramsey's fifth goal of the year. Early in the second half Oakes collected a loose ball on the right side of the box and scored her fifth goal of the season for a 3-0 Pirate lead. In the 56th minute Penelope Crowe (Sr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) took a short cross from Baker and scored her fourth goal of the season for a 4-0 Pirate lead. Tisthammer scored the final Whitworth goal in the 66th minute from an assist by Crowe. Whitworth controlled the match, outshooting L&C 23-2, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. MacDougal made five saves for the Pioneers, while Callie Bergstrom (Fr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) only had to make one save to her her second straight shutout. Whitworth, currently second in the Northwest Conference standings, will finish the regular season at home next week against George Fox (Friday) and Pacific (Saturday). |
