SPOKANE, Wash.-- Whitworth University could not close the door on visiting Pacific Lutheran University Sunday afternoon in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match, and PLU's Ashley Polen used that opening to force a 1-1 tie. Polen headed in Courtney Walker's corner kick in the 82nd minute for her first goal of the season. Neither team could find the net in overtime, but each had opportunities. Whitworth's Callie Bergstrom (Fr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made three of her six saves in the extra time, while PLU's Kamryn Morgan made one save in the second overtime. Whitworth dominated the first half, outshooting the Lutes 7-1 and earning an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Whitney Ramsey (Sr., F, Spokane, Wash.) drew a foul in the box in the eighth minute when she got behind a PLU defender. Penelope Crowe (Sr., F, Bellingham, Wash.) converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. But the fact that the lead was not greater after a period in which PLU had trouble just clearing the ball out of their half of the field gave the Lutes confidence coming out of halftime. In the second period PLU played evenly with Whitworth before eventually scoring the tying tally. Whitworth finished with an overall shot advantage of 18-8, but seven of the Lutes' shots were on-goal, while only six of the Pirate attempts forced PLU to try to make a save. Whitworth eventually finished with a 12-3 edge in corner kicks. The Pirates (5-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 NWC), who are 0-2-1 since a 5-0 start, will host Whitman College (5-2, 3-1) on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. PLU returns home to host George Fox University (5-2, 1-2) on Saturday. |
