SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Allie Smith's first career goal lifted 10th-ranked Whitworth University to a 2-1 victory over #22 UC Santa Cruz in a key non-conference women's soccer match on Friday afternoon at UCSC.
The game was a rematch of last season's NCAA Division III first round match, which the Pirates won by a 2-1 margin in overtime. This time all of the scoring came in the first half, but the result was the same for Whitworth (2-0). The Banana Slugs (1-1-1) got on the board first when Annick Lamb scored in the 19th minute. But Emily Rohde (So., F, Lake Oswego, Ore.) tied the match in the 31st minute when she took a pass from Elizabeth Mattila (So., MF, Ferndale, Wash.) and put the ball past UCSC keeper Janneke Lang. Only three minutes later Smith (Fr., F, Missoula, Mont.) scored the match-winner, unassisted, the first of her career. Callie Bergstrom (Fr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made six saves in the net for the Bucs, three in each half. Lang made two stops for UC Santa Cruz. Whitworth will conclude its trip to California with a match at Cal State East Bay (3-0) on Sunday at 11:00 am. |
