SPOKANE, Wash. -- Emily Rohde made sure Whitworth University's women's soccer home opener ended positively when she scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 victory over visiting Wisconsin-Whitewater on Thursday afternoon. The fifth-ranked Pirates improved to 4-0 while the Warhawks fell to 2-2. Elizabeth Mattila (So., MF, Ferndale, Wash.) set up the goal by driving hard by a defender to the goal line right of the net. She crossed the ball back to Rohde (So., F, Lake Oswego, Ore.), who scored from 12 meters for her second tally of the season. The goal came in the 72nd minute. The Pirate managed only one goal against Whitewater despite an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. But Whitewater keeper Mary Scanlin was up to the task, knocking away 10 of the shots. Callie Bergstrom (Fr., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made a save to stop the only Warhawk shot directed toward the net. Whitworth will have over a week before its next match when the Pirates travel to Linfield College Saturday, Sept. 20 for the Northwest Conference opener for both schools. Whitewater will stay in Spokane to play a neutral site game on Saturday at noon against Pacific Lutheran University. |
