WALLA WALLA, Wash.-- (From Whitman SID Office) The Whitworth University women's soccer team broke open a close game with a flurry of second-half goals and posted a 4-0 Northwest Conference victory over Whitman College Wednesday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Whitney Ramsey had
a goal and an assist

Four Pirates booted goals as Whitworth improved to 8-4-1 in the NWC and moved to within a point of second-place Willamette University in the conference standings. Whitman, slowed by a few key injuries in the past few weeks, dropped its fourth straight game and saw its NWC record fall to 6-6-1.

Whitworth took charge in the opening minutes of play, applying plenty of offensive pressure and putting a ball in the back of the net in the 11th minute. Elizabeth Mattila (So., F, Ferndale, Wash.) drove up the right side of the field and crossed a pass to an onrushing Whitney Ramsey (Sr., F, Spokane, Wash.), who redirected the ball for her fourth goal of the season.

Whitman finished the first 45 minutes of action with a 7-6 edge in shots. The second half, however, was a different story. Seven minutes in, Kelly Baker (Sr., D, Boise, Idaho) made it 2-0 Whitworth, rifling a shot from 30 yards out that trickled just over the fingertips of Whitman keeper Courtney Porter.

Baker's goal, her fourth of the season, seemed to open the floodgates. The Pirates moved in front 3-0 in the 62nd minute when Devin Whitmill (Fr., D, Napa, Calif.) knocked in her first goal of the season, converting one of the eight corner kicks Whitworth took in the game.

Jenny Kryzmowski (So., F, Gallup, N.M.), assisted by Ramsey, completed the scoring with a 15-yard strike at the 71:39 mark.

Whitworth, which outshot Whitman 9-2 in the second half, got three attempts from Emily Rohde (So., F, Lake Oswego, Ore.) and two shots each from three other players. Callie Bergstrom (Fr., GK, Spokane, Wash.), who made her only two saves during Whitman's first-half surge, earned the shutout in goal for the Pirates.

Larson-Xu and Hasson accounted for most of Whitman's offense with three shots apiece. Senior Jennifer Doane had two shots. Junior forward Corina Gabbert, Whitman's leading scorer on the season, played about half the game but was still hampered by an injury suffered four games ago.

Whitman stays at home to host Lewis & Clark College at 11 a.m. Saturday. Lewis & Clark then plays Whitworth in Spokane, Wash., at the same time on Sunday.
