ORANGE, Calif. – Whitworth University completed its final day of competition at the SunWest Softball Tournament with a split, falling 4-2 in eight innings to Wellesley (Mass.) and winning 2-1 against Williams (Mass.). The Pirates, who went 2-3 at the SunWest, complete their spring break trip to California with a doubleheader at NAIA #2 Point Loma on Thursday. Wellesley 4, Whitworth 2 (8 innings) - Box Score For the second time in as many meetings with Wellesley at the SunWest tournament, the Pirates fell to the Blue in extra innings. This time Wellesley (8-0-1) won 4-2 in eight innings. Similar to Monday's game, Whitworth took a 2-0 lead early in the contest. After Morgan Thomsen walked to lead off the second inning, Josie Ball hit her third home run of the season to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Whitworth only managed two more hits the rest of the game. Wellesley scored a run in the third, then tied the game in the seventh to force the extra frame. The Blue managed two runs in the eighth on three hits and a Pirate error. Jessie LaPlante went the distance for the Bucs, allowing four runs (three earned) on 12 hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Whitworth 2, Williams 1 - Box Score Whitworth (8-14) broke a four-game losing streak with the 2-1 win over Williams (8-8). Jessica Mangis pitched a complete game to earn the win and improve her record to 3-3 this season. She gave up only one run (none earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Williams scored an unearned run in the top of the first for the early lead. The Pirates went in front in the third with a two out rally. Lacey Kerr and Ball had back to back singles. Sara Rylaarsdam drove in Kerr with another single and Ball scored when the Williams secondbaseman couldn't handle a grounder by Caty Lieseke. Mangis stranded a pair of Ephs on the bases in the seventh inning to preserve the win. |
