PASCO, Wash. - Jessica Mangis pitched eight shutout innings to lead Whitworth to a 1-0 win in the opener of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader with visiting George Fox. Then Rachel Anderson hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Pirates a 9-1 win in the nightcap and a sweep of the Buins on Saturday. Whitworth is now 8-12 overall and 4-6 in the NWC, while George Fox is 4-15, 3-8. Sunday's doubleheader will now start at 11:00 a.m.
Game 1: Whitworth 1, George Fox 0 (8 innings) - box score and play by play The Bruins had two runners on with only one out in the top of the first before Mangis struck out Becka Doyle to end the threat. Meanwhile the Pirates could generate no more than a single base-runner in the first, fifth and sixth innings. The Pirates finally got to Bradely with two outs in the eighth when Anderson and Lacey Kerr each lined singles to left field. Shanon Carlon's shot up the middle struck Bradely's leg for an infield hit, but as Bradely shuffled the ball to first in an effort to get Carlon, it got away and allowed Anderson to score the winning run. Carlon finished with two hits for Whitworth.
Game 2: Whitworth 9, George Fox 1 (5 inn.) - box score and play by play Whitworth chased Badely in the bottom of the fourth by scoring four runs. Kerr had an RBI double and Carlon singled home a run. After Erin Lee came on to pitch, Ashley Carey singled home another run. The Bruins picked up their only run of the day in the top of the fifth when Shelby Briske doubled home Doyle with two out. George Fox had two more runners in scoring position when Whitworth pitcher Kelsey Ayers struck out Lee. After the first out of the fifth, Sami Parr singled and Mandee Edwards doubled. Anderson followed with her second home run of the season, ending the game on the eight-run rule. Ayers allowed six hits and gave up the single run to improve to 3-5 this season. She struck out four and walked three. Bradely took the loss to fall to 4-14. Kerr finished with two hits, two RBI's and two runs scored for Whitworth. Carlon, Parr and Anderson also had a pair of hits for the Pirates. Doyle had two hits while scoring the Bruins' only run. The teams will finish the four-game series on Sunday with another double-header, scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m. The start time was moved up an hour to try to accomodate anticipate wet weather. |
