PORTLAND, Ore. - Rachel Anderson drove in five runs and scored five times over two games to lead visiting Whitworth to one of its strongest offensive days of the season in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday at Lewis & Clark. The Pirates won the opener 15-2 in five innings and took the second game 9-4 to complete the series sweep of the Pioneers. After beginning the season 1-8, Whitworth has finally worked its way back to the .500 mark at 14-14 and the Bucs are now 10-8 in the Northwest Conference. L&C fell to 1-31, 1-21.
Game 1: Whitworth 15, L&C 2 (5 inn.) - box score and play by play Lacey Kerr drove in four runs with a pair of two-run singles, one in each inning. Anderson had an RBI in each inning, as did Ashley Carey. Mandy Edwards sliced a two-run double in the fourth inning. Caty Lieseke went 3 for 3 and scored twice for the Bucs. Kelsey Ayers pitched all five innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits. She struck out three and walked one batter while improving to 5-7 this season.
Game 2: Whitworth 9, L&C 4 - box score and play by play Anderson got the Bucs on the board first with a two-run double in the second inning. But the Pioneers put up a run of their own in the second then rallied for three in the third on a three-run home run by Jessica Mullins. Whitworth put together its third big inning of the day with six runs in the fourth. Three of those runs scored on Parr's three-run homer, the first of her career. Lieseke added a two-run single later in the inning. Jessica Mangis pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on six hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter to win her third game of the weekend and improve to 9-7 this season. The Pirates will finish the rest of their season at home, beginning next weekend with a four-game series against 11th-ranked Willamette at Diana Marks Field. |
