Whitworth Drops Three of Four at NW Cup |

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Whitworth University softball team finally got to play outside, but the transition was a tough one for the Pirates who dropped three of four games at the season-opening Northwest Cup tournament hosted by Concordia University.
Saturday Game 1: Corban 8, Whitworth 0 (5 inn.) - complete box score
The Pirates were shut out on only two hits. Sami Parr and McKenzie Stuby had the hits for the Pirates. Meanwhile the Warriors scored five times in the second inning and three more in the fifth.
Saturday Game 2: Northwest Christian 5, Whitworth 2 - complete box score
Ashley Carey hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Stuby added her own solo shot in the seventh for the first Whitworth runs of the season. Jessica Mangis pitched 4.2 innings as the starter and Kelsey Ayers tossed the final 1.1 innings.
Sunday Game 1: Whitworth 8, Eastern Oregon 4 - complete box score
The Pirates earned their first win after opening an 8-1 lead and holding off the Mountaineers. Carey's second home run of the weekend, a three-run shot, highlighted Whitworth's four-run second inning rally. Lacey Kerr added a solo shot in the third. The Pirates added three more in the seventh, including a steal of home by Nina Ratliff. Mangis went the distance to earn her first pitching victory of the season.
Sunday Game 2: Concordia 15, Whitworth 5 (6 inn.) - complete box score
The host Cavaliers broke open the game with seven runs in the sixth inning. Kerr drove in all five Pirate runs with a two-run homer in the first, a run-scoring single in the third and a two-run double in the fifth. Concordia finished with 16 hits in the game.
Whitworth is off until March 7 and 8 when the Pirates travel to Oregon to take on defending Northwest Conference champion Linfield.
