SPOKANE, Wash. - Chelsey Chamberlain homered twice and drove in five runs to lead visiting Pacific to a sweep of Whitworth in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Marks Field. The Pirates left a total of 21 runners on base in the two games as the Boxers won the opener 11-2 and took the nightcap 4-2. Pacific improved to 26-12 overall and 17-9 in the NWC, while Whitworth dropped to 15-19, 11-13.
Game 1: Pacific 11, Whitworth 2 - box score and play by play Leading 2-0 through four innings, Pacific added four in the top of the fifth. Kristen Croxford, Brooke Toy and Jessie Garcia all drove in a run during the rally. In the fifth Carrie Maerz led off with her seventh home run of the season to give the Boxers a 7-0 lead. Garcia's second RBI double of the game started the four-run seventh for Pacific and Chamberlain's two-run home run ended the scoring. The Pirates scratched out two runs in the bottom of the seventh, including an RBI single by Sara Rylaarsdam. Kelsey Ayers pitched all seven innings for Whitworth, giving up nine earned runs on 14 hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Maerz had three RBIs and scored twice, while Chamberlain, Croxford and Garcia all drove in a pair of runs for Pacific. Lacey Kerr had three of Whitworth's four hits, but the Bucs stranded 12 runners during the game. Whitworth left the bases loaded in the first and third innings, and left a pair of runners on base in both the sixth and seventh.
Game 2: Pacific 4, Whitworth 2 - box score and play by play After Croxford opened the second with a triple, Brooke Fogwell singled her home for the first run of the game. In the third Chamberlain drove a ball over the left field wall to score Maerz and Pacific had a 3-0 lead. In the third the Pirates loaded the bases with one out on three straight walks. Ashley Carey and Rylaarsdam had RBI singles, but Kerr tried to score from second on Rylaarsdam's hit and was thrown out at home by Boxer right fielder Morgan Mittelsdorf. Tuey was listed as the starting pitcher in the line-up, but switched positions with Chamberlain (DP) before the first pitch. When Chamberlain got in trouble in the third, Tuey came on to pitch and gave up the two singles, but got the final two outs as well. She would only allow one other hit the rest of the game. Whitworth starting pitcher Jessica Mangis also settled down after the third inning. Pacific's final run came on Chamberlain's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. The Pirates had two runners on base in the seventh but Tuey struck out Carey to end the game. She improved to 5-2 by allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 4.2 innings. Mangis, who pitched well enough to win most games, fell to 10-9 after giving up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Maerz had three hits and Fogwell went 2 for 3 to lead the Boxers at the plate. Whitworth stranded nine more runners in the second game. Whitworth and Pacific will finish the season with a final doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at noon. Whitworth seniors Rachel Anderson, Mandee Edwards and Rylaarsdam will be recognized between games. |
