SPOKANE, Wash. - Jessie Garcia's home run capped a five-run rally in the seventh inning as visiting Pacific defeated Whitworth 6-2 in the second game of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon on Marks Field, sweeping the twin bill and the four-game series. Garcia also hit a solo shot in the first game as the Boxers won the opener 5-2. Both teams have concluded their season and Pacific will finish third in the NWC standings with an overall record of 28-12 and a conference mark of 19-9. The Pirates conclude the year 15-21, 11-15 and fifth in the final standings.
Game 1: Pacific 5, Whitworth 2 - box score and play by play The Pirates got on the board early when senior catcher Rachel Anderson homered to left field in the bottom of the second inning. But Pacific answered back with three runs in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Chelsey Chamberlain dribbled a ball between the circle and plate that went for an RBI single. Kristen Croxford was hit by a pitch, driving home the next run. Toy singled home the final run through the left side of the infield. The Boxers added a run in the top of the sixth on Garcia's home run to left field. Their final run came in seventh when Toy's sacrifice fly scored Croxford. Whitworth got one back in the bottom of the seventh when Anderson's spinning ball up the first base line got away from Chamberlain and Ashley Carey scored. Croxford came in to make a diving catch on McKenzie Stuby's fly to left with the bases-loaded, ending the game. McNealy (14-5) gave up two earned runs on seven hits in her second straight complete-game effort against the Pirates. She struck out five and walked seven as Whitworth stranded 12 runners on base for the second time in the series. Kelsey Ayers (5-10) allowed five runs on seven hits for the Pirates. She struck out two and walked four. Game 2: Pacific 6, Whitworth 2 - box score and play by play With the score tied at 1-1 through the first five and a half innings, Whitworth rallied to go in front without getting a hit. Three walks, surrounding fly-out to left and a ten-minute rain delay, loaded the bases before Carey walked and drove in the go-ahead run with one out. But Pacific's Lauren Tuey settled down in the circle and got the final two outs on pop ups to prevent any further damage. With one out in the top of the seventh and Croxford on base, Fogwell tried unsuccessfully to sacrifice. With two strikes she swung away and her single to center field got past Lacey Kerr, allowing Croxford to score from first base. A throw trying to get Fogwell at third went into the outfield, allowing Fogwell to come all the way around and scored on the play, giving Pacific a 3-2 lead. After Ashley Billingsley was hit by a pitch and a walk to Teri Shigeno, Garcia hit her home run to left for the final margin of the game. Tuey (6-2) picked up her second win in relief in as many days, going the final 4.0 innings and not allowing a hit. She did give up and earned run when she walked five batters and she struck out two Pirates. Jessica Mangis (10-10) took the loss for Whitworth after giving up six earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and seven walks. Billingsley, who doubled home Pacific's first run, had a pair of hits for the Boxers, as did Stephanie Vanoudenhaegen. |
