ANAHEIM, Calif. - Lacey Kerr hit a home run and Jessica Mangis pitched a five-inning two-hitter to lead Whitworth to a 9-0 win over Carleton (Minn.) and another split on Thursday at the Sun West Tournament, hosted by Chapman University. However today's split may sting a little more than the previous two after the Pirates gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 6-5 to Hamline (Minn.) in the opening game of the day. Whitworth finished 3-3 in the Sun West Tournament and is now 6-12 overall. Hamline 6, Whitworth 5 - box score and play by play The game was tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Edwards hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, her second of the season, giving Whitworth a 3-1 lead. In the fifth Carey singled home two more runs to give the Bucs a 5-1 advantage. Meanwhile Kelsey Ayers was pitching very well through six innings, allowing only one run on four hits at that point. After getting the first two outs of the seventh, the Pipers put together four straight singles to score two runs. After Mangis replaced Ayers in the circle, two errors and a wild pitch allowed the final three runs to score unearned. Carey went 3 for 3 at the plate, while Kerr, Carrie Gibson and Rachel Anderson each had two hits for the Pirates. Whitworth 9, Carleton 0 - 5 inn. - box score and play by play After Whitworth scratched out a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Pirates got three more in the second when Edwards singled home a run and Kerr hit a two-run home run. Gibson and Edwards added run-scoring singles in the top of Whitworth's three-run third inning. After taking the hard-luck loss in Whitworth's first game of the day, Mangis improved to 4-7 on the season with her shutout effort. Edwards finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Pirates at the plate. Whitworth will have little time to rest as the Pirates are scheduled to host George Fox in a four-game Northwest Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a double-header each on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at noon. |
