Whitworth Comes From Behind to Split at UPS

PASCO, Wash. - Whitworth rallied in the seventh inning to win 4-2 in the second game of Saturday's Northwest Conference softball double header at Puget Sound. The Loggers won the opener 9-0 in six innings. Whitworth is now 9-13 overall and 5-7 in the NWC, while UPS is 9-15, 3-8.

Sunday's doubleheader will start at noon.

Game 1: UPS 9, Whitworth 0 (6 inn.) - box score and play by play
Whitworth could get nothing going offensively against Logger pitcher Auriel Sperberg, who threw a complete-game four-hitter. She struck out nine Pirates and only walked one.

Victoria Raeburn hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the eight-run rule. She finished 2 for 4 with four runs batted in. Aryn Grause went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two runs driven in for the Loggers.

Kelsey Ayers pitched for the Pirates, giving up six earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out three and walked two to fall to 3-7 this season.

Game 2: Whitworth 4, UPS 2 - box score and play by play
Whitworth trailed 2-1 heading to the final inning, but rallied for the win. Lacey Kerr's sacrific fly brought home Carrie Gibson to tie the game. Mandee Edwards scored the winning run on a wild pitch, then McKenzie Stuby doubled home Rachel Anderson for the final run of the rally.

Jessica Mangis (6-6) went the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits. She struck out two and walked two batters.

Gibson finished with a pair of hits for the Pirates. Kelsey Scanlan had three hits for UPS.

Sperberg took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on five hits.

The teams will finish the four-game series on Sunday with another double-header, scheduled to get underway at noon.
