Pirates and Loggers Even Series with Another Split

TACOMA, Wash. - Whitworth scored eight unanswered runs to defeat Puget Sound 8-3 in the opener of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. But the host Loggers did not allow the Pirates to claim a third come-from-behind win in the series, taking the nightcap 3-2 in eight innings.

Whitworth is now 10-14 overall and 6-8 in the NWC, while UPS is 10-16, 4-9.

Game 1: Whitworth 8, UPS 3 - box score and play by play
Caty Lieseke had three hits and drove in three runs to help Whitworth rally from an early 3-0 deficit to win 8-3. Shannon Carlon and Ashley Carey each had two hits and two RBIs for the Bucs.

The Pirates not only trailed 3-0 in the fourth, they had also not gotten a hit against UPS pitcher Auriel Sperberg. But Lacey Kerr led off the fourth with a double and scored on Lieseke's double to get Whitworth on the board.

Lieseke and Carey had RBI singles in Whitworth's three-run sixth inning. Carlon doubled home two runs in the four-run seventh.

Kelsey Ayers went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits to improve to 4-7 for the Pirates. She struck out five and walked two batters. Jessica Mangis pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn her first save of the season.

Game 2: UPS 3, Whitworth 2 (8 inn.) - box score and play by play
Whitworth nearly rallied to win for a third time in the four-game series, but UPS held off the Pirates 3-2 in eight innings.

Sami Parr had two hits for Whitworth, while Aryn Grause had three hits for the Loggers.

UPS led 2-0 through five innings when the Pirates tied the game in the sixth. Caitlin Doherty singled home the Bucs' first run and Parr scored on a throwing error later in the inning to tie the game.

Amelia Kurashige-Elliott drove home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Mangis (6-7) went the distance for Whitworth, allowing three runs on 13 hits. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter. Sperberg also threw a complete game for UPS to pick up the win.

Whitworth will head to Portland to play Lewis & Clark on Friday and Saturday in a four-game Northwest Conference series.
