Whitworth Sweeps Coll. of Idaho in 2007-08 Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Whitworth women's swimming team won all 11 events, and the Pirate men won nine of 11 events to sweep a pair of season-opening dual meets from visiting College of Idaho on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Aquatic Center.

The College of Idaho returned to its traditional name this week, abandoning the name of Albertson it used for more than 15 years. The final women's score was Whitworth 156, College of Idaho 42. The men's score was Whitworth 128, C of I 57.

Christine DeHaven, Samantha Kephart and Brittany Gresset each won a pair of individual events for the Pirates, and Whitworth won both relays. DeHaven won the 1,000 Freestyle (11:27.31) and 100 Freestyle (58.80), Kephart won the 50 Free (25.15) and 100 Butterfly (1:00.39), and Gresset won the 200 Individual Medley (2:18.69) and 100 Backstroke (1:03.00). The Whitworth A 200 Medley Relay team won with a time of 1:57.08 and the Pirate A 200 Freestyle Relay team won with a mark of 1:31.53.

Whitworth's David Dolphay and Michael Woodward each won a pair of men's events and the Pirates again swept both relays. Dolphay won the 1,000 Freestyle (10:10.53) and 200 I.M. (2:08.53), while Woodward won the 200 Freestyle (1:45.28) and 100 Free (48.57). Quinton Darling won the 100 Butterfly (56.04) and Daniel Bergman took the 100 Breastroke (1:03.62) for the Bucs. The Coyotes got wins from Casey Walker in the 100 Backstroke (57.23) and John Green in the 50 Free (22.77). The Pirate men won the 200 Medley Relay in 1:43.12 and the 200 Free Relay in 1:31.53.

Whitworth will return to competition in two weeks in Walla Walla, Washington. Whitman College will host the tradition Northwest Conference opening meets with the NWC Pentathlon on Friday the 26th at 6:00 p.m. and the Relay Invitational on Saturday the 27th at 11:00 a.m.

The Pirate men are aiming for their 6th consecutive Northwest Conference championship, while the Whitworth women are hoping to improve on last season's second place finish in the NWC.
