Whitworth Men and Women Grab First Day Lead

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- The Whitworth University men's and women's swimming teams grabbed the first day lead on Friday night at the Northwest Conference swimming championships hosted by Pacific Lutheran University at the King County Aquatic Center.

David Dolphay won his third NWC 500

The Pirate men, aiming for the sixth consecutive NWC title, picked up a pair of individual victories to score 206 points. Puget Sound followed with 183 points.

David Dolphay won his third consecutive title in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:39.41. Tom Radtke was fifth in the event (4:49.73). Michael Woodward won the 200 Individual Medley, coming from behind over the final 50 yards, in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:54.12. Justin Brandler added a runner up finish in the 50 Freestyle (21.64). Dom Rieniets of Linfield defended his title in the 50 with a time of 21.17.

Whitworth was also second in both men's relays, finishing second to UPS each time. The Pirates were edged by the Loggers 1:25.29 - 1:25.87 in the men's 200 Free Relay, and beaten 3:26.99 - 3:31.55 in the 400 Medley Relay.

The complete men's team scores are: Whitworth 206, Puget Sound 183, Linfield 132, Whitman 130, Pacific Lutheran 113, Lewis & Clark 69, Willamette 57, Pacific 47.

Gresset had a record-breaking 50 Free

Whitworth's women, hoping to end Puget Sound's 11-year run of championships, holds a 226-208 lead over the Loggers.

After claiming victory in the meet's opening event, the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:38.28, the Pirates finished 1-2-3 in the 500 Freestyle to take control. Natalie Turner won with a time of 5:05.26, followed by Samantha Kephart (5:06.43) and Christine DeHaven (5:09.67).

Brittany Gresset defended her title in the 50 Freestyle, breaking her own school record and the NWC meet record with a time of 24.08. Ashley Lecoq was second (24.70).

The Pirates finished second to UPS in the 400 Medley Relay (4:00.55 - 4:02.34).

The complete women's team scores are: Whitworth 226, Puget Sound 208, Lewis & Clark 119, Whitman 117, Linfield 88, Willamette 77, Pacific 46, Pacific Lutheran 34.

The meet will continue on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
