SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Whitworth University women's swimming team knocked off NCAA Division II Seattle University for the second time this season, handing the visiting Redhawks a 119-86 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Aquatic Center. Samantha Kephart won three individual events to lead Whitworth's women. She swam to victory in the 50 Freestyle (24.83), 100 Butterfly (58.09) and 500 Freestyle (5:13.18). Natalie Turner won twice for the Pirates. She raced to a win in the 1,000 Freestyle (10:49.76) and the 100 Freestyle (54.17). Christine DeHaven led a 1-2 Whitworth finish in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:58.60, a season-best by nearly two seconds. Yasi Kheshgi won the 400 Individual Medley in 4:44.77, the best time in the Northwest Conference so far this season. In all, Whitworth's women won 7 of 11 events. The Pirate men got a pair of victories each from David Dolphay and Michael Woodward. Dolphay earned wins in the 1,000 Freestyle (9:54.56) and 500 Freestyle (4:51.60), while Woodward won the 200 Freestyle (1:45.21) and 100 Freestyle (48.35). Seattle's Jakub Jiracek, from the Czech Republic, set a new Whitworth Aquatic Center record while winning the 100 Breaststroke in 57.51. The old record of 57.88 was set by Jeff Hillis of Central Washington University at the 1986 NAIA Championships, which were hosted by Whitworth. The Pirate women had edged the Redhawks 134-128 in Seattle on November 10th earlier this season. The Pirates will traverse the state of Washington next weekend when they compete in a dual meet at Whitman College on Friday night in Walla Walla, then at Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday in Tacoma. |
