SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth University's record-setting Samantha Kephart closed out the final home dual meet of her career with one more record, leading the Pirate women to a 128-77 win over visiting University of Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Aquatic Center. The Pirate men defeated the Loggers 121-84 to extend their NWC dual meet winning streak to 57 and complete their ninth straight unbeaten NWC dual meet schedule.

Kephart (Sr., Santa Maria, Calif.) won the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.53, breaking her own Whitworth Aquatic Center record of 57.22 she set as a freshman at the 2005 Northwest Conference championship meet. It is the fastest time in the nation to-date at the NCAA Division III level. Kephart also won the 500 freestyle in 5:14.38. Natalie Turner (So., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) won both the 1,000 freestyle (10:47.79) and the 100 freestyle (54.83), for the Pirates. Christine DeHaven (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash.) won the 200 freestyle (2:00.05), Brittany Gresset (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) won the 50 freestyle (24.80) and Yasi Kheshgi (So., Evanston, Ill.) won the 200 individual medley (2:14.98) to lead the Pirate women. Gresset, Turner and Kephart were joined by Ashley Lecoq (Fr., Renton, Wash.) on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:40.42). Whitworth won eight of the 11 events to improve its women's dual meet record to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the NWC this season. Leesa Cotton won the 100 backstroke (1:02.41) and Amy Polansky took the 100 breaststroke (1:10.36) for the Loggers (6-1, 6-1). Both were also part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:55.49).
David Dolphay (Sr., Great Falls, Mont.) and Michael Woodward (Fr., Springfield, Ore.) led the Pirate men to their 57th NWC dual meet victory in a row. Competing in his final home dual meet, Dolphay won the 1,000 freestyle (9:56.77) and 500 freestyle (4:57.68), while Woodward won the 200 freestyle (1:46.01) and 100 freestyle (48.51). Justin Brandler (Jr., Tacoma, Wash.) won the 50 freestyle (22.12), Bryan Clarke (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) took the 200 yard individual medley (2:01.10) and Josh McDowell (Sr., Shelton, Wash.) won the 100 butterfly (53.69) for the Pirates, who improved to 8-2 overall and 7-0 in the NWC this season. Jackson Kowalski won the 100 backstroke (55.13) for UPS (4-3, 4-3), while Paul Hughes posted the NWC's best time in the 100 breaststroke (58.73) this season. The Loggers also won both relays, taking the 200 medley relay in 1:37.86 and the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.77. Both teams will now turn their attention to the 2008 Northwest Conference championship meet on February 8-10 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. The Whitworth men are aiming for their sixth consecutive NWC title. The UPS women have won every NWC title since they joined the conference for the 1996-97 season (11 in a row). |
