SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Whitworth University swimming teams easily earned season-opening wins on Friday at Pacific University. The Pirate men defeated the Boxers 168-31, while the women won 153-47.
The Pirate men won all 11 events in the meet. Freshman Rory Buck had an early-season breakthrough, posting a provisional NCAA qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.68, only a tenth of a second off of the school record (57.59). Michael Woodward also led the way by winning both the 50 freestyle (22.11) and 100 freestyle (48.37). The Whitworth women were nearly as dominant, winning 10 of the 11 events in the meet. Senior Brittany Gresset had the most impressive individual time of the meet, winning the 50 freestyle in 24.56. Sophomore Ashley Lecoq posted a very fast 59.58 while winning the 100 butterfly and sophomore Christine DeHaven won both the 200 freestyle (2:00.89) and 500 freestyle (5:19.77)..
