Feb. 13 Whitworth 9, George Fox 0 - Complete box score SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men's tennis team returned from a busy weekend trip to Oregon with two wins - both by shutout - in three matches. The Pirates defeated George Fox 9-0 and fell at Willamette 5-4, both on Friday. On Saturday the Bucs won 9-0 at Lewis & Clark. Whitworth improved to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the NWC. Friday's win at George Fox was controlled at the top by Michael Shelton and Joe Wales. Shelton and Wales combined to win 8-1 while playing together at #1 doubles. Shelton then went on to win 6-2, 6-3 at #1 singles. Wales won by an identical set score at #2 singles. Whitworth could not overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles in Friday evenings loss at Willamette. All three doubles matches were hard fought, but Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams came the closest to scoring a doubles point at #2, losing 8-6. Zalewski went on to win 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) at #3 singles, while Williams pulled out a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Colin Barrett and Kellen Oetgen played well throughout the weekend and their dominance was very clear in Saturday's match at Lewis & Clark. After they paired to pull out an 8-6 win at #3 doubles, Barrett went on to win 6-1, 6-2 at #5 singles, while Oetgen cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles. Whitworth returns home to host George Fox and Pacific next weekend at the Scotford Tennis Center. |
