SPOKANE, Wash. - For the second time in seven days Whitworth rolled to a 9-0 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match. This time it was on the Pirates' home courts on Friday night at the Scotford Tennis Center. The Pirates cruised through the doubles matches to earn the first three points. The closest of the three doubles competitions was at #1, where Michael Shelton and Joe Wales defeated Stefan Lagielski and Ralf Schulz 8-3. Shelton played the longest individual match of the night, defeating Scott Barnett in a #1 singles match that included wild swings of momentum. After Shelton pulled out the first set 6-4, Barnett blanked Shelton 6-0 in the second set. But Shelton recovered to take the match with a 6-1 third set. Wales and Lagielski played a hard-fought #2 singles match that Wales won 7-5, 6-4. Otherwise the Pirates had little difficulty on Friday night. Colin Zalewski won 6-1, 6-3 at #3 singles, Kellen Oetgen won 6-3, 6-2 at #4, Colin Barrett won 6-0, 6-1 at #5 and Chase Talbot took #6 singles 6-3, 6-0. Last Friday Whitworth defeated George Fox by an identical 9-0 score on the road. Whitworth will host Pacific on Saturday in a pair of matches at the Scotford Tennis Center. |
