Colby 8, Whitworth 1 - Complete box score SPOKANE, Wash. - While enjoying a spring break trip to the resort community of Hilton Head, South Carolina, the Whitworth men's tennis team had a chance to compete in three matches and the Pirates finished 1-2. Whitworth used 10 of the 11 players on its roster during the trip.
On Tuesday the Pirates were beaten 8-1 by Colby (Maine). The Mules, ranked 8th in the Northest region by the ITA, swept the singles and took two of the three doubles matches. Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams gave Whitworth its only point at #2 doubles. Zalewski pushed his opponent to three sets at #3 singles before losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. St. Thomas (Minn.) handed Whitworth a hard-fought 5-4 defeat on Wednesday. The match turned in the doubles when the Tommies took two of the three sets. Zalewski and Williams won again to improve to 9-5 this season, defeating their opponents 8-2. Michael Shelton and Joe Wales fought hard before falling 8-5 at #1 doubles. Shelton and Wales both went on to win in singles. Shelton won 6-1, 6-3 at #1 singles, while Wales led 4-3 in the first set before his opponent retired. Austin Abelar picked up the final Pirate point at #6 singles when he pulled out a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) win. Whitworth closed the week with a 6-3 win over Principia (Ill.). Shelton teamed with Zalewski to win 8-4 at #1 doubles, while Colin Barrett and Williams won 8-2 at #2 doubles. Playing at #1 singles, Wales won 1-6, 6-1, 7-5, while Zalewski won at #2 singles 6-1, 6-3. Williams earned a 7-6, 6-3 win at #3 singles and Kellen Oetgen steamrolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles. Phil Aldridge lost a three-setter at #5 singles by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), while Ben Hamming fell 6-3, 6-4 at #6 singles. Whitworth will return to action next weekend when the Pirates play at Linfield on Friday (April 4), then take on nationally-ranked Whitman twice on Saturday (April 5). |
