SPOKANE, Wash. - Visiting Pacific Lutheran rolled to a 9-0 win over Whitworth in Northwest Conference men's tennis action on Friday evening at the Scotford Tennis Center. The Pirates fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Lutes were competing in their season opener. Michael Shelton and Joe Wales fought hard with PLU's #1 doubles team of Kevin Floyd and Joel Trudel before falling 8-5. The Lutes won the second and third doubles by scores of 8-4 and 8-3, respectively. Trudel went on to beat Shelton 6-2, 6-2 at #1 singles. Wales and Floyd played a marathon at #2 singles before Floyd pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) win. Three of the other singles matches were close before PLU's players pulled away later in the match. Michael Manser defeated Colin Zalewski 7-6 (4), 6-3 at #3 singles, while Scott Sheldon pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kellen Oetgen at #6 singles. Whitworth will look for its first win of the season on Saturday when the Pirates host Puget Sound. PLU gets an early season showdown at defending NWC champion Whitman. |
