Whitworth Sweeps Pacific in NWC Doubleheader

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth swept visiting Pacific (Ore.) in a Northwest Conference men's tennis doubleheader on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center, winning the first match 6-3 and the nightcap 5-4. The Pirates have won four straight to improve to 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the NWC, while the Boxers fell to 2-2, 2-2.

Michael Shelton and Joe Wales went unbeaten in four matches to lead the Pirates on Saturday. In the first match the pair won 8-3 at #1 doubles over Micah Leo and Spencer Hing. Shelton then went on to win 7-5, 6-3 over Michael Okada at #1 singles, while Wales defeated Leo 6-1, 7-6 (5) at #2 singles.

In the day's second match, Shelton and Wales defeated Leo and Hing 8-4. Shelton would go on to beat Leo 6-3, 6-2 at #1 singles, while Wales beat Okada 6-1, 6-4 at #2 singles.

Colin Zalewski won twice at #3 singles for Whitworth. He beat Hing 6-4, 7-5 in the first match, then defeated Eric Furuya 6-3, 6-1 in the second match.

Nhat Nguyen won three times for Pacific on Saturday. He and Patrick Kinghorn won twice at #3 doubles. In the first match the pair defeated Brian Lays and Chase Talbot 8-6, then defeated Lays and Kellen Oetgen 8-6 in the night cap. Nguyen defeated Talbot 7-5, 6-4 at #6 singles in the day's first competition. Oetgen defeated Nguyen 6-3, 6-0 at #5 singles in the later match.

Whitworth will travel west to take on Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran next weekend.
