Seattle Univ. 5, Whitworth 2 - Complete box score SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth was able to take the doubles point, but could not get enough of the three-set singles matches to break its way to pull off an upset of visiting Seattle University on Saturday Afternoon. The NCAA Division I (provisional) Redhawks defeated the Pirates 5-2 in a non-conference men's tennis match.
Michael Shelton and Joe Wales gave Whitworth a quick edge in doubles play, taking the #1 flight 8-3 over Mark Shkretbtan and Matt Enkema. After Patrick Boorkman and Adam Strizich defeated Colin Barrett and Kellen Oetgen 8-5 at #3 singles to even the doubles competition, the Pirates pulled out the doubles point when Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams edged Alex Montgomery and Dylan Reetz 8-6 at #2 doubles. The top three singles flights all went Seattle's way. Shkretbtan slipped past Shelton 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at #1 singles in the closest of the three matches. Montgomery defeated Wales 6-2, 6-2 at #2 and Boorkman topped Zalewski in another close match 7-5, 6-4 at #3. Reetz edged Williams 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at #4 singles to clinch the team victory for the Redhawks. The final two matches were stopped by time constraints, but the individuals leading at the time were given credit for singles victories. Barrett led Enkema 6-4, 2-1 at #6 for the Pirates' only singles point. Strizich led Oetgen 6-4, 3-6, 3-1 in the fifth flight. Whitworth will return to action one more time before heading to Yakima for the Northwest Conference tournament next weekend. On Tuesday the Pirates will host Lewis-Clark State. |
