Whitworth Tops Puget Sound for First Win of 2009

SPOKANE, Wash. - Riding the momentum of a doubles sweep, Whitworth defeated visiting Puget Sound 6-3 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.

The Pirates won all three doubles points for the difference in the final team score. Kellen Oetgen and Colin Barrett pulled out an 8-6 win over Sam Finklemana and Ollie Napier at #3 doubles in the closest of the three matches. Joe Wales and Michael Shelton won comfortably at #1 doubles 8-4, while Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams rolled to an easy 8-2 win at #2 doubles.

Wales then went on to beat Nick Kelly 6-1, 6-2 at #2 singles, while Zalewski defeated Finkleman 6-4, 6-4 at #3 singles to clinch the team victory for Whitworth during the first half of singles play. Also during the first half, Jamie Hosmer of UPS pulled out a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Shelton at #1 singles.

In the second half of singles play, Williams defeated Napier at #4 singles 6-2, 6-2. Alex Harrison picked up a point for UPS by holding off Barrett 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) at #5 singles. Scooter Sabel beat Oetgen 6-1, 6-2 at the sixth singles slot.

Whitworth will hit the road next weekend for three NWC matches at George Fox, Willamette and Lewis & Clark.
