Whitworth 7, Linfield 2 (4/4/09) - complete box score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth clinched the top seed at the upcoming Northwest Conference women's tennis tournament by taking a 7-2 decision from visiting Linfield on Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.

Linh Aven reversed her singles loss from the March 15 match

The Pirates improved to 18-3 overall and 15-0 in the NWC with one regular season contest remaining. The six-time defending conference champion Wildcats dropped to 15-4, 13-2.

Unlike the first meeting between the squads last month, Whitworth did not sweep the doubles points. Linfield's Sallie Katter and Abby Olbrich pulled out an 8-6 win at #1 doubles over Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall of Whitworth. However the Pirates won the other two doubles matches fairly handily. Linh Aven and Mya Towne defeated Sarah Click and Sophie Larson 8-4 at #2 doubles, while Justine Hays and Katie Staudinger topped Sarah Watanabe and Kiana Nip 8-2 at #3 doubles.

Whitworth extended its lead during the top three singles matches. Burns bounced back from the loss in doubles to defeat Katter 6-2, 6-3 at #1 singles. Aven, who lost to Larson in the first meeting in March, defeated Larson 7-5, 6-1 at #3 singles. Linfield's Olbrich held on to defeat Marshall 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at #3 singles and pull the Wildcats within 4-2.

The Pirate depth proved superior in the bottom flights. Town defeated Nip 6-2, 6-4 at #4, Erica Bosman beat Click 6-3, 6-1 at #5 and Staudinger improved to 19-0 this season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Watanabe.

Whitworth will finish its regular season NWC schedule with a match at Whitman on Sunday.
