SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite a 13-match winning streak coming to an end, the Whitworth women's tennis team had a very successful spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina this week. The Pirates are now 15-3 overall, 12-0 in the Northwest Conference and are ranked 30th in the latest (March 17) ITA national Division III rankings.

Staudinger is now 16-0 in singles play this year

On Monday Whitworth faced fellow NWC member George Fox and defeated the Bruins 9-0, repeating the score from February 20th in Newberg. Rachel Burns and Mya Towne won 8-0 at #1 doubles to lead a doubles sweep by the Pirates. Then Siri Carlson and Claire Hemming won their first singles matches of the season. Carlson won 6-1, 6-1 at #5 singles, while Hemming won 6-0, 6-2 at #6 singles.

Later on Monday Whitworth handed Colby (Maine) a 7-2 defeat. The Mules came in ranked 23rd in the Northeast Region, but the Pirates won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles sets. Justine Hays and Katie Staudinger pulled out an 8-6 decision at #3 doubles, while Burns and Alli Marshall won 8-0 at #1 doubles. Staudinger went on to win 6-3, 7-5 at #5 singles to improve her season singles record to 14-0. Burns won 6-3, 6-1 at #1 singles and Marshall won 6-3, 6-3 at #2 singles.

Whitworth steam rolled past Principia (Ill.) 9-0 in the first of two matches on Thursday. The Pirates shutout the Panthers in all three doubles matches. Erica Bosman did likewise in her #4 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-0. Linh Aven received the stiffest test of the day, yet still breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win at #3 singles.

Late on Thursday afternoon Whitworth took on Erskine (S.C.) and pushed the Flying Fleet to the brink before losing 5-4. Erskine is ranked 24th in the latest NCAA Division II ratings by the ITA. The Fleet swept the doubles matches, including a tough 8-5 win over Hays and Staudinger at #3. But Whitworth came back to win four singles matches. Burns won 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) at #1 singles and Town won 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6) at #3 singles. Staudinger pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) win at #5 singles, while Hays rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles. Bosman nearly gave Whitworth a team win before falling 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) at #4 singles.

Whitworth gets little time to rest as the Pirates are scheduled to play tonight (Friday) at Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference match as they travel back from the trip east. On Saturday Whitworth will play at Pacific Lutheran.
