Whitworth 9, Puget Sound 0 (3/27/09) - complete box score TACOMA, Wash. - Undaunted by playing their third and fourth matches in a three-day period after traveling 3,000 miles across the country, the Whitworth women's tennis team rolled to a pair of 9-0 victories at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
On Friday Whitworth got off of a plane from South Carolina and headed straight to Puget Sound to battle the Loggers. The Pirates rolled to a 9-0 win. Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall won 8-2 at #1, Mya Towne and Erica Bosman rolled 8-3 at #2, while Katie Staudinger and Justine Hays cruised 8-2 at #3 doubles. In singles play Burns won 6-2, 6-0 at #1, Towne won 6-0, 6-0 at #2 and Bosman won 6-1, 6-2 at #3. On Saturday afternoon the Pirates returned to the UPS Tennis Pavilion, but took on Pacific Lutheran. The outcome was exactly the same as Whitworth won 9-0. At #1 doubles Burns and Marshall won 8-1, while Towne and Bosman won by the same score at #2 doubles. Claire Hemming teamed with Hays to win 8-3 at #3 doubles. In singles play Marshall won 6-2, 6-0 at #1 singles, while Towne won 6-4, 6-1 at #2. Staudinger improved to 18-0 this season with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #4. Hays ran away with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 and Stephanie Reardon won 6-1, 6-0 at #6. Whitworth finally gets a chance to rest. The Pirates will host Linfield next Friday with a chance to clinch the top seed to the upcoming Northwest Conference tournament. The following day Whitworth will play at Whitman. |
