Whitworth Beats Whitman to Complete Perfect NWC Season

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - (From Whitman SID Office) In a match that began in the afternoon sun and ended under the Sunday night lights, visiting Whitworth University put the finishing touches on a 16-0 Northwest Conference women's tennis season with a 7-2 victory over Whitman College.

Whitworth, now 19-3 on the season, got the early jump with a sweep in doubles. Four matches in singles went to three sets, with Whitman winning at No. 1 and No. 3 while the Pirates were victorious at No. 2 and No. 5.

Whitman, 12-4 in the NWC and 13-7 overall, got its two team points from Elise Otto, who outlasted Rachel Burns 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 1, and from Katie Oost, who got past Linh Aven 2-6, 7-5 (8-6), 6-4 at No. 3.

Whitworth countered with three-set wins at No. 2, where Alli Marshall downed Hadley DeBree 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, and at No. 5, where Erica Bosman defeated Margo Lentz 6-1, 2-6, 10-6.

The Pirates also pocketed straight-set wins from Mya Towne at No. 4 and from Katie Staudinger at No. 6.

The most competitive match in doubles came at No. 2, where Towne and Linh edged Oost and Kaur by a 9-7 count. Burns and Marshall earned an impressive 8-3 win at #1 over Otto and Lentz. Staudinger and Justine Hays won 8-4 at #3.

Both Whitman and Whitworth are slated to play non-conference matches against Lewis-Clark State in the week prior to the NWC championship tournament, which is set for April 17-18 at the Yakima (Wash.) Tennis Club. Whitworth will be the No. 1 seed in that tournament with the No. 3 seed going to Whitman.
